Composting
Composting at home is a great way to recycle! Over 30% of the average rubbish bin contains material that can be composted into an organic soil improver, ready whenever you need it.
Compost forms as a result of the natural breakdown of organic material derived from living plants. The “breaking down” is aerobic i.e. using oxygen, a process performed by bacteria, fungi, insects and animals that inhabit soil. In a compost heap these organisms generate heat as they decompose the organic matter and break it down into fine particles.
Composting is natures own and oldest method of waste disposal and soil fertilisation.
To make good compost you need to have an equal mixture of green and brown materials. Green materials contain a high percentage of nitrogen and breakdown quickly; brown materials contain high percentages of carbon and break down slowly.
Site your compost bin on bare soil, where it is easily accessible and ideally a sunny location.
Add your mixture of green and browns making sure to keep plenty of air circulation – don’t pack the material too tightly.
Stir or turn the contents regularly, this will help speed up the process.
Typically, compost will be ready in 8 – 12 months.
