Recycling and waste management firm Viridor and Southern Water are throwing open their doors to visitors in September as part of the Heritage Open Days event organised by English Heritage.

Heritage Open Days celebrate England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties not usually open to the public or those that would usually attract an entrance fee. It is England’s biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event and provides a unique opportunity to explore some of the hidden gems in English cities, towns and villages.

On Saturday 11th September from 10:00 – 16:00, Viridor’s materials recycling facility, operated on behalf of West Sussex County Council, and Southern Water’s sewage treatment works, both in Ford, will show people what happens to their recycling after the dustman has collected it and where their waste water goes after it is flushed away.

Tessa Taylor, Regional Communications Manager said: “This is a unique opportunity for anyone curious about what happens to their recycling once it’s collected to get a rare glimpse behind the scenes at one of our busiest sites. We don’t just trash the trash but separate out all the materials we receive so they can be recycled into other products.

“We know that people are increasingly interested in reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill and hope that by coming and seeing what happens at our site they will go away inspired to recycle more and waste less.”

Mark Thompson, Southern Water’s Wastewater Manager, said: “The open day will give people the chance to see what happens to their waste water after it has left their homes.

“The works serves 130,000 people in the Littlehampton and Bognor area and treats an average of 400 litres of wastewater every second.

“It is all too easy for people to forget about water that is flushed away but hopefully an insight into the processes required to deal with it will help encourage them to use water wisely.”

The tour lasts two hours. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment by calling 01903 712 620 or emailing fordeducation@viridor.co.uk
