Full Sweep of Standards for Viridor
Viridor Waste Management, West Sussex County Council's recycling contractor has recently gained an internationally recognised standard for occupational health and safety management systems - BS OHSAS 1800.
First introduced in 2007, OHSAS 18001 has been developed by leading trade bodies, international standards and certification bodies. Holding OHSAS 18001 demonstrates a company's commitment to all aspects of health and safety and preventing injury or ill health at work.
The scope of Viridor's certification covers those activities they manage on behalf of West Sussex County Council (WSCC) that includes Household Waste Recycling Site and transfer station operations, as well as the transportation of wastes and recycling to reprocessing and disposal facilities.
OHSAS 18801 is the third standard awarded to Viridor by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and complements their previously achieved Environmental and Quality Management Systems (ISO 14001 and 9001). All three standards are regarded as the hallmarks for business quality management systems.
Speaking on behalf of Viridor, Peter Miller Operations Manager said "Implementing and achieving the health and safety management system forms part of our overall management strategy and will help us to identify training needs and maintain legislative compliance in the dynamic environment of the waste industry."
Phillip Russell, Head of Wastes Management Services, WSCC said "I am delighted that Viridor have met their contracted obligations and provide such a safe and efficient service to the local tax payer. This is reflected by very high satisfaction rates”.
