Prestige Crawley waste site set to re-open in spring
A new permanent prestige Household Waste Recycling Site is expected to be operating in Crawley by late spring/early summer of next year.
It will be on the same Metcalf Way site as the one that was severely damaged by fire in June.
Henry Smith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “Extensive technical inspections have been completed and we are now looking to meeting the pledge we made after the fire, which was to re-open the site within a year. Our partners Viridor have pulled out all the stops to help us make this happen.”
In the meantime, the neighbouring temporary site for household rubbish will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, as well as at weekends, from September 23.
The opening hours will be the same as weekends – 9am-5pm.
As at weekends, the site will be only for household rubbish brought in by cars, car-derived vans and small trailers – there is a limit of 200 kg (440lb) of DIY, construction or demolition waste per vehicle. It still cannot accept:
· Large trailers.
· Transit-type vans of any size.
· Over-height vehicles (barriers still in place).
· ‘Walking in’ waste.
Henry, who also represents Pound Hill, Worth and Maidenbower, said: “We have been committed to continually improving the service at the temporary site because it is a valuable – and much appreciated – facility in the town.
“We would like to thank residents for their patience when using the alternative facility but remind them that it cannot provide the level of service we would expect at the permanent site. Because of this, we ask residents to only use the temporary site only if it is absolutely essential.”
