Bringing WEEE to Selsey
Posted on 17 January 2013
THE first of a renewed series of trial mobile collection events in Selsey of broken or unwanted electrical items begins later this month.
West Sussex County Council will hold its first Mobile Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) event of this year on Friday 25th January at Selsey’s East Beach Car Park between 8am and 3pm.
Subsequent to that they will be held every two months until November 29.
Further funding for these popular events was secured last year and comes following a series of successful trial events in Selsey last year to help achieve government aims to increase WEEE recycling by bringing WEEE events to local populations.
During this, a total of 33 tonnes of electrical waste was collected, at an average of 5.5 tonnes per event. This included more than 900 TVs and monitors. The UK is expected to see stricter targets implemented next year for maximising WEEE collection rates. Putting in place innovative solutions such as this trial to make WEEE recycling as easy and accessible as possible will be high on the agenda.
Among items collected were a 1970s drill, Christmas lights, toys, hairdryers, microwave ovens, old televisions and even a mini jukebox.
The events are being run by West Sussex County Council in partnership with Viridor – the site operator and Chichester District Council.
County Council Deputy Leader Lionel Barnard, Cabinet Member responsible for waste, said: “We are confident the residents of Selsey will help us maintain our UK pacesetter status in recycling WEEE items by continuing to take advantage of the service.
“Therefore we are very pleased to have secured additional funding for another year to continue these events.”
Among WEEE items that will be accepted this year are large white goods, fridges and freezers, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, household batteries in addition to display equipment such as televisions or laptops and small electrical appliances.
Selsey WEEE events will take place on:
- Friday 25th January 2013
