Recycling sites

Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRSs) across West Sussex began reopening from Monday 11th May for limited materials.

From Monday 1st June the range of items will be extended to include garden waste, general household waste, wood, cardboard, electrical items, bulky items, and furniture. We are currently unable to accept soil / hardcore, plasterboard, asbestos, tyres or textiles for the time being.

If you are thinking of taking a trip to one of the HWRSs there are several things, you need to consider.

Before planning your journey you should:

Check that the item(s) you are bringing are accepted, as per the list above

Check our opening hours and days. Sites will be running their usual summer opening days and hours.  Not all sites are open every day, so please make sure to check before making a journey.

Before visiting a site please note:

You should continue to use your household collections for recycling and general waste where possible, and only visit the site if the journey is essential.

Vans and pickups will be permitted on the sites, but will need to display their WSCC permit to access the site

Trailers will continue to be rejected for the time being due to the operational changes made to sites.

The mobile service that visits Selsey and the Witterings will be reopening, from Thursday 4th June, for wood and garden waste only. Please check www.westsussexrecycles.org for the opening dates and times.

Once at the sites there will be certain measures in place for the safety of visitors and staff:

The number of vehicles accessing the sites will be restricted. Visitors should expect long delays at sites and should delay their visit to avoid the first couple of weeks if possible.

There will be no pedestrian access at any of the sites under the current social distancing measures

Social distancing barriers will be in place. Visitors will be directed into enclosed bays to dispose of their waste.

Only one person will be allowed to get out of a vehicle. Please travel to the sites alone if possible. If other people travel to the site with you, they must remain in the vehicle.

Site staff will not be able to help unload your waste and recycling. Please do not bring anything that you cannot safely remove from your car on your own.

Residents may need to move their vehicle and repark in order to access different bays.

West Sussex has 11 Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRS) to help West Sussex householders recycle waste from their homes. Recycling centres used to be known as rubbish tips or dumps. They are now called Household Waste Recycling Sites or HWRSs, as the majority of waste is recycled.

There is a gross vehicle weight restriction of 3.00 tonnes at all sites.

All vehicles over 2.2 metres high must use:  Burgess Hill, Crawley, Westhampnett and Worthing HWRS only.

Construction and Demolition waste is restricted to 200kg per visit.

Please click on your local site on the left hand side to find out opening times and what can be recycled at the site. Or you can use the map below to locate your nearest site.
