Household Waste Recycling Sites accept household electrical appliances. Click to locate your nearest site.
If you require collection of such items, some District/ Borough Councils will collect, normally for a fee.
Old domestic equipment such as cookers, refrigerators, washing machines, freezers, microwave ovens, bicycles, lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners, tools, household utensils and other similar items are accepted at the Household Waste Recycling Sites.
Electrical & electronic appliances contain hazardous substances which need to be taken out, treated and recycled. New legislation has come into force, called 'WEEE' (the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive) this states that retailers must take back any electrical and electronic items bought from them and producers must contribute financially for the items to be taken apart, any reusable parts recovered, and the rest recycled. For more information on WEEE please click here.
Reduce the waste: Use wind-up or solar appliances where possible, e.g. radios and calculators. Then you can listen to the radio during power cuts, or when you are working in the garden, without using batteries.
