Click here to find your nearest Bottle Bank. Please put only glass bottles and jars in the bottle banks, noting the colour separation. Some banks are colour separated and some are mixed.
If we are to be effective in our efforts to recycle glass we must ensure that only certain types of glass are put into the bottle banks. If the wrong type of glass is found in a bank then the whole load may be rejected and sent to landfill. These simple guidelines will help:
DO put the following into the bottle banks:
- Only GLASS bottles and jars in banks.
- Blue coloured bottles should be put in the "green" section of the bottle bank.
- Remove lids and tops and wash jars out before placing in bottle bank - the lids can go with the tins and cans. If you mix metal and glass, the load could be rejected and be sent to landfill.
- Return glass milk bottles to your milkman.
DON'T put the following into the bottle banks:
- "Pyrex" or glass saucepans e.g. "Visionware".
- Crockery, pottery and other ceramics, "Grolsch" or similar bottles as the stopper is ceramic.
- Milky opal bottles such as "Malibu".
- Window glass and mirrors.
- Light bulbs and neon tubes.
- Lead crystal and drinking glasses.
Recycled glass containers can be melted down and used to make new glass containers or made into aggregates for the building industry.
