Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations, fluorescent tubes are considered to be hazardous waste. However, if disposed of correctly, the components from spent fluorescent tubes such as mercury, glass, aluminium and brass can be recycled and re-used in industry.
Fluorescent lighting can be disposed of safely in the special containers provided at the permanent Household Waste Recycling Sites. Click here to locate your nearest site.
FACT: The mercury from one fluorescent tube can pollute 30,000 litres of water beyond a safe level for drinking!
