TV screens and monitors are classified as hazardous waste.  Separate storage arrangements are in place to make sure items classified as hazardous are kept in secure conditions before they are taken away for specialist treatment. The treatment process for TV sets includes removing the phosphor coating inside the screen before the glass is crushed and used to manufacture new screens.

The electronic components inside TV sets contain a large proportion of copper, which is also recovered and reprocessed.
