EC Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
Since 1st July 2007, a piece of environmental legislation known as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive has been in force in the UK. The overall aim of the directive is to make producers of electrical and electronic equipment responsible for their products when they become a waste. It encourages the separate collection and subsequent treatment of electrical items to maximise their diversion from landfill.
Information for Householders
The WEEE directive aims to minimise the amount of WEEE householders throw out with their general waste. By keeping WEEE separate from other wastes it can be appropriately treated and recycled and any hazardous substances removed.
Householders are not banned from disposing of WEEE in their bin, but are encouraged to dispose of it separately for recycling.
All of the permanent Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRS) in West Sussex accept electrical and electronic equipment. To locate your nearest site please click here.
Bulky Waste Collection Service
Your District or Borough Council may offer a bulky waste collection service. Please contact them to find out.
Information for Businesses
The WEEE Directive introduces new responsibilities for businesses and other non-household users. These organisations will need to ensure all separately collected WEEE is treated and recycled.
It is important you understand your obligations and circumstances under the WEEE Regulations.
